A Transition Guide just for Dads

An excerpt from

Changes in the Roles of Fathers in the 21st Century

Not only are you going to have to get used to the role of being a new dad, but that of taking on an additional role of “caregiver”.  In all the history of mankind, the male’s role was that of being the “Provider” and “Protector”.  However, now in the 21st century new tasks are yours, and, for the most part without much instructions, role models or examples to follow.  Up until now our role (as dads), given to us by society and culture, has been that of working (providing) and taking care of the home front (protection).  Nevertheless,  in today’s economy, where many couples both work, society not only allows you to become involved with the newborn, but demands you take an active part in baby’s life at a much earlier age.  With your dad’s generation (that would include me) the fathers were not allowed, for whatever reason, to participate with childcare until he was older around 3-5 years of age.  Then we were permitted to play “piggy back” or “ride a horsey” or such; but we were not expected to know and actually perform childcare chores, as you are.
